CYCLIST ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS ON ANZAC HIGHWAY: July 2008 – December 2008 (approximately)
The project team is very conscious of the number of cyclists that use ANZAC Highway each day, travelling between Glenelg and the City.
As works progress on the northern half of the bridge deck near the South Road and ANZAC Highway intersection we have been able to provide a cycle lane outbound heading towards Glenelg but have had to temporarily remove the cycle lane for city bound traffic near the intersection.
This means that cyclists heading towards the City on ANZAC Highway from Glenelg will have to merge with traffic for a short distance near the works at the South Road intersection. The cyclist lane begins again on the eastern side of the intersection just outside the Home Ideas Centre Ashford.
These cycle lane arrangements will be in place until late December 2008 (approx.) at which time, the completion of ANZAC Highway works is anticipated.
Recently a cyclist expert from the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure was asked to assess these cycle lane arrangements and make some recommendations on what could be done to further improve cyclist provision and safety.
Recommendations included:
- Shortening the existing eastbound lane by 30 metres. This can be achieved by relocating the existing cyclist lane 30 metres further west and removing the white unbroken bicycle lane line. This will effectively shift the merging area further west and away from the location where the three lanes of traffic are required to diverge.
- Installing a number of “Watch for Bicycles” signs around the construction site on ANZAC Highway heading towards the South Road intersection
- Moving the plastic bollards back on the eastern exit side of ANZAC Highway to provide a wider inbound (towards the City) left lane for vehicles and cyclists to share.
These recommendations are in the process of being implemented by the project team as quickly as possible.
In addition, AdelaideConnect has asked SAPOL (police) to assist in ensuring cyclist safety by enforcing the reduced speed limits through the intersection.
We thank cyclists for their continued patience while these new safety measures are introduced.
